About

Artist Statement

Nature and memory shape my artwork; capturing the sensation I experience looking at a landscape or object. No matter the medium, layering of color, shape and texture form the core of the process. I particularly enjoy the tactile aspect of art making, the physical connection between artist and medium. This has led me to explore a variety of ways to create art: painting, printmaking, collage and, most recently, felting with wool.

Using locally sourced fleece along with commercially available fibers, I begin with blocks of color. The first phase is wet felted, layers and details are built-up with needle felting and additional wet felting until I am satisfied with the result. Working with fiber connects me to a tradition of “women’s work;” creating art using techniques traditionally applied to utilitarian items highlights the skill and care necessary to produce objects we may take for granted.

Personal

Creating art has always been part of my life but it was a private passion until the past decade or so. Studio art courses throughout my school years, from elementary age through graduate school, provided counterpoint to academics and way to express myself. As an architect, I found drawing and painting outside the boundaries necessary for construction enhanced my professional work.

I have been lucky enough to live in 6 states. Working in community with other artists has provided continuity and inspiration no matter where I happen to be. Classes at UCLA and Bennington, workshops in Santa Fe and Stockbridge, mentors in Louisville KY and San Francisco, all inform the work I make today.
